Background of Tripura Adibashi Mahila Samity

It was after the independence of India, when the process had started to organize the state of Tripura with Indian union and efforts have been made by a group of tribal women to plan for its team and utilize their leisure time to organize the women of Tripura with special reference to the Tribal welfare. Although the size, shape and geographical location of the State were not favorable for starting any developmental activities, initiatives were taken based on the available local resources both in terms of physical and financial resources.

Considering the needs of reaching out, the team decided to educated the women first and slowly organize their movement towards the organization of tribal women of Tripura. As a first step, a night school started, titled as Madhu Madhabi Naisha Bidyalaya and later on, responsibility was taken to learn and teach fellow tribal women to bring them into the light of development. Later on, to support these motivated tribal women the team also started child nutrition centre to look after the health and development of their children. The continuation of the education and nutrition programmes has reflected that only education will not help the motivated activities that can provide little income to these women, based on their individual skills. Activities like Embroidery, Weaving etc were introduced initially.

The growing and progress of the stated development initiatives finally guided the team for acquiring a legal identity for them under which they can introduce organized actions for overall development of the tribal women of Tripura. Accordingly the formal establishment of Tripura Adibashi Samity had taken place during mid 1964 and got its legal identity on September 25, 1964 and since them the Samity is working for all round development of tribal women of Tripura.

The involvement and reach of the Samity in the tribal area and among the tribal population were shouldered with various development al actions starting from providing drinking water to shelter, organizing coaching classes for the tribal girls students, imparting skills training for starting income generation activities etc.

The dedicated services of the Samity has been recognized with several prestigious memberships affiliations and awards. Responding towards present needs of development services, the initiatives of the Samity is not restricted its services for any particular direction but the Samity is extending its dedicated services in 3 major areas namely Education, Income generation through vocational training and women empowerment to ensure sustainable development of the tribal and non-tribal women of Tripura.
